FAQs

Do I need a GP referral?

For most private ADHD assessments, a GP referral is not required. You can self-refer directly to us.
However, if you plan to pursue medication or shared-care with your GP afterwards, it can be helpful to let them know you’re having an assessment.

Will my diagnosis be accepted by the NHS and/or schools?

If you choose a private provider that follows NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines and uses DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, there is no reason why your assessment report should not be accepted by the government, schools, or other professionals.
Our assessments are conducted by qualified clinicians who follow these national standards to ensure reliability and recognition.

What happens if ADHD is not diagnosed?

It’s important to remember that the you are seeking and paying for an assessment rather than diagnosis. The outcome will be subject to a review of the evidence.
If ADHD is not diagnosed, we will discuss other possible formulations for your difficulties and you will be offered tailored recommendations. You will also receive guidance on next steps, such as alternative assessments or appropriate support strategies moving forward.

Can I access medication if I get a diagnosis?

If you receive a diagnosis and medication is considered to be beneficial, this will be explored as part of your recommendations. You can also speak with your GP to let them know that you are planning to have a private assessment, and they will advise whether they are able to prescribe medication for you if a diagnosis is confirmed.
If your GP is unable to prescribe, or if NHS waiting times are very long, and you would like to explore alternative private options, I’m pleased to say that Assessing Neurodivergence UK has established links with a CQC-registered clinic and with other practitioners who can prescribe ADHD medication, such as psychiatrists.
As a partnered psychologist with these providers, the report I prepare for you will be fully recognised by them if you choose to pursue medication privately.
This is an important consideration when choosing your private ADHD assessment provider.
The usual process for medication involves an initial medication consultation, followed by titration (adjusting the dosage to find the most effective level). Once your medication and dosage are stable, the usual process involves the prescribing clinician liaising with your GP so that your ongoing prescriptions can be managed through the NHS.

How long does the assessment take?

The initial consultation usually lasts around one hour.
A full diagnostic assessment typically takes around 90 minutes, although this can vary depending on each individual’s needs and pace.

Can parents stay in the room during a child’s assessment?

A calm, friendly, and supportive environment will always be aimed to be created for your child. However, if your child would feel more comfortable with you in the room, you are absolutely welcome to join us.
Children are also encouraged to bring something from home that helps them feel relaxed – such as a fidget toy, comfort item, or something of interest to talk about during the observational part of the assessment.

Adult assessments – What if I don’t have a childhood informant?

As part of an adult ADHD assessment, it’s often helpful to include information from at least two people who know you well, ideally one person who knew you as a child and another who knows you as an adult. This could, for example, be a parent or family member, and perhaps a partner, close friend, or colleague. These perspectives can help build a clearer picture of your experiences over time.
However, I understand that this isn’t possible for everyone to have two informants and that’s absolutely fine. The assessment can still go ahead, and we can discuss this further during your initial consultation to find the best way to gather the necessary background information together.

The clinic’s car park entrance is on Arthur Road.

Directions 🧭

From Bournemouth Town Centre, follow signs for Christchurch via the A35. Continue on the A35 for around 5 miles, then take the Christchurch exit towards the town centre. Follow Barrack Road and turn onto Stour Road. The clinic is on the left-hand side, just before the train station. The entrance to the clinic’s carpark can be found on Arthur Road.

Clinic Entrance:

The clinic entrance is the blue door, located at the side of the building. Please come in, take a seat in the waiting area, and you’ll be collected when it’s time for your appointment.
